5 Creative Ways to Help Your Nearest Animal Shelter

If you love dogs as much as we do, you’ve probably wandered the halls of a fare number of Animal Shelters or Human Societies. Dog owners like us would take home every four-legged, sad eye giving, slobbering dog in there if we could. Your nearest animal shelter is always in need of extra help, and donating money (though very practical) is not the only way to lend a hand! Here are a few creative ways to lend your love to shelters that need it the most.

1. Sharing (on Social Media) is Caring

Sounds too easy? Well, it really is that simple, folks! Many shelters have links to Facebook and Twitter that make this even easier. Follow the shelter of your choice, pay attention to new and old dogs coming in and out of their system, and SHARE!

2. Calling all Social Media “Experts”

It doesn’t matter if you’re a teenager just learning how to manage a website, or an IT professional! Shelters are constantly trying to spread the word about different fundraisers or adoptions. If you can manage your own Facebook and Instagram, you are more than likely able to manage a social media page (such as their Facebook or Instagram) for a shelter!

3. Love those Instagram filters?

Many of us fancy ourselves as professional photographers especially when it comes to our pets (just check the camera roll on our phones)! Why not extend your gift in capturing amazing snaps to your local shelter? Shelters are constantly updating pet profiles and a great picture of a pup is way more motivating than any written description. If you are a photographer and want to expand or even begin your portfolio, why not start at your local pet shelter?

4. Trying to get your steps in?

Taking care of our health is just as important as taking care of our pet’s health. Shelters are always looking for helpers to walk their dogs, so if you are planning to hit the trails to get fresh air or hit your daily step goal, why not take a furry friend along as a travel companion.

5. Feeling Crafty?

Maybe technology is not your best friend, but Granny taught you how to do a mean cross stitch. Have a few old blankets, t-shirts, or sweatshirts stuffed in the back of your closet? Why not try and turn those extra items into a brand new item like a dog toy or even a dog bed. Maybe take an old bandana and stitch “ADOPT ME” on it just in case the potential new pet owner needs the extra encouragement! There are a ton of great ideas you can find with step by step instructions on websites like Pinterest and Youtube- Check it out!
